Nobel laureate to present on the third day of IMEKO World Congress 2024
The professor presented online and talked about new developments in the past ten years since winning the Nobel Prize for his achievements in microscopy. HUN-REN SZTAKI is being present all week at the conference, which will take place from 26 to 29 August.
Professor Hell's keynote afternoon lecture showed that the microscopy technique that won the Nobel Prize ten years ago has been followed by a ten times more accurate one, and that this could have a huge role in biology as well as chemistry: the researcher cited the development of medicines as an example, because new techniques can make the function of certain proteins more understandable and observable.
The morning was all about workshops. The workshop on metrology, co-organised by CIPM, focused on the digitisation of measurement and traceability. In relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), IMEKO pays particular attention to which research can contribute to certain goals - this is also indicated in each publication. The SDG workshop focused on the measurement challenges of zero-emission engines (hydrogen, electric) and second life vehicle batteries.
Also on the third day, the Helmholtz Prizes were awarded: the €20,000 prize, which is awarded every two years by the Helmholtz Fund, is given to researchers who have achieved significant milestones in metrology - often in emerging fields, according to the official wording. Professor Hell received this award back in 2001.
During the event, EPIC CoE consortium member HUN-REN SZTAKI portrait drawing robot was in continuous operation, with visitors queuing up to get their own drawing. The drawing robot also drew a picture of Professor Tilo Pfeifer, who has been a member of IMEKO for 52 years, and this year an award was named after him. The day ended with a group photo session, to which all guests were welcome. A photo gallery of the third day of the IMEKO World Congress is available on the HUN-REN SZTAKI Facebook page by clicking here.
The International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) is an international, scientific organisation covering the complete range of measurement, which has 41 official country members from all over the world. IMEKO members present their scientific results at conferences in 25 different subfields every year. The sub-areas (TCs, Technical Committees) decide when and where to organize their annual conference, except for the world conference every 3 years, in such a year, IMEKO members come together in one place in the world. The 2027 congress will be held in Italy.
